Today I decided I would attempt to cycle 100 miles on the turbo. Not such much for the physical challenge but as a mental challenge. My reasoning being that if I can sit on the turbo for 100 miles then nothing on the JoGLE will be harder to achieve mentally.
I set myself up this morning with loads of stuff to watch on the Sky+ and started.
The first 90 mins consisted of starting in the lowest gear and doing 5 mins in each gear on the bike with a 10 mins spin at then end. I then moved on to a constant speed for 60 mins before repeating the 90 mins again in reverse. After this it was just a case of mind over matter until the 100 miles were complete.
Physically the challenge was not a major issue and it was another good practice for the nutrition and hydration stratgey I have for long rides. Mentally, it was rather dull but I completed it and now have a good place to go, mentally, when the going gets hard on outdoor rides.

Day 123 - Sunday 26th October 2008
It was time for the group ride at Johns today.
Weather was not very nice - cold and wet although the weather during the ride was far better than that on the M4 whilst driving there!
Got my first ever puncture today and big thanks to Dave for changing the inner tube, saved us all a bit of time standing next to the road as I would have taken quite a bit longer!
It was my first long ride for a couple of months and it was nice to get out on the road again for a decent ride.
It was also nice to meet up with Joy again as I had not seen here for a long time as well as catching up with John, Sasha and Dave.

Day 119 - Wednesday 22nd October 2008
Not been up to a huge amount since last update.
Working late and days out of the office have curtailed eveining turboing, but hopefully that is now in the past.
Went out on the bike on Saturday, although it was sunny it was also cold and windy.
I am really suffering from cold painful feet whilsy out on the bike at the minute which has curtailed the distance - but Wiggle assure me my overshoes are on their way, hopefully they will make it before the weekend.
Saturdays ride was 25 miles in around 1 hr 30 mins before cold feet and noisy gears sent me home.
Spent the rest of the day washing the bke (and car) and giving the gears a quick service.
Last nights turbo session got canned as I felt as though I was at the start of a cold, however I feel fine today so hopefully just a false alarm.
So work and the M3 allowing I should get a bit of turbo time this evening.
Well work and the M3 behaved and I was home on time so jumped on the turbo.
Did a 10 mins gear pryamid to warmup.
Followed by 3 x 8 mins efforts at 75% MHR with 2 mins recovery spinning inbetween.
Finished with 8 mins easy spinning as a cool down.
Total time 45 mins.

Day 101 - Saturday 4th October
Went for something a bit different today.
mik and I drove to Box Hill near Dorking in Surrey.
He wanted to spend a bit of time walking up and down the hill whilst I went cycling.
It was a lovely sunny morning, although pretty cold - around 6C when we started.
I headed off to do a few loops of the infamous Ballbuster Duathlon route - detailed here http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Box-Hill-Route
The entire circuit is 7.9 miles and includes over 1000 feet of climbing.
I had about 1.5 hours to cycle around before meeting mik back at the car to go for a final walk up the hill with him.
I did 2 full circuits of the course plus an additional climb to the summit and back again.
Total distance was 19.3 miles with around 3000 feet of ascent done in 1hr 32mins.
It was really great to be out on a cold but sunny day and I have never seen so many road cyclists in one place before, they were all really friendly as well.
This was my introduction to the real Surrey hills, but the Box Hill climb was not too taxing, just all about getting into a rhythm and keeping going.
I am looking forward to getting back out there again and tackling some of the other famous Surrey Hills climbs.

Day 97 - Tuesday 30th September
Had a day off work today.
I was supposed to be going on a sunrise hot air balloon flight with mik - a wedding present we got last year - however it was cancelled due to the wind and rain.
So rather than kick my heels around the house all day (or cancel the day off and go to work) I thought I would get out on an ride.
A quick look out the window confirmed it was raining - but not too bad.
I though I would test out some of the winter kit that arrived from Wiggle a couple of weeks ago.
I used my shiny new winter bib tights and a long sleeve base top and wore my yellow waterproof on top.
I looked at the skull cap and decided it was not cold enoughfor that yet.
I ummed and ahhed over whether to wear my normal mitts or the new waterproof full finger gloves - I wore the mitts.
My overshoes are still on their way from wiggle so i had no option for footwear.
I set off and within 10 mins the light rain had changed to tipping it down rain which continued for the entire ride. The road was covered in surface water. not really a problem apart from downhills. I took it really easy on the donwhill sections due to the wet surface and the rather large amount of crap which had accumulated on the road. It was good experience though, cycling twisty downhills in the wet.
After about 40 mins, my feet were a bit on the cold side and I was thinking how nice it would be to be wearing waterproof overshoes.
My fingers also got cold, so I think full finger gloves may be about to become the norm.
In total I covered a very wet and windy 32.1 miles, route here http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/30-Sep.
Time taken was 2hrs and 9mins.
Despite the wet and wind it was nice to get out on the road again instead of the turbo.

Day 95 - Sunday 28th September
A quiet weekend cycling wise as we had the kids for the first time in ages (due to summer holidays)
Went cycling with them on Saturday covering a 10 mile off road road which was really nice in the sunshine.
So its back to the turbo for the weeknights and a free weekend coming up which should allow me to get back on the roads again.

Day 87
Time to get back in the saddle after a few unproductive weeks.
Busy today as off to see The Wildhearts in London tonight, so went for a nice turbo session to ease myself back into training.
Started off with a 20 min warm up spin, getting the heart reate up to 65%.
Followed with a 20 min effort with a max heart rate of 75%.
Followed by a 10 min cool down to bring the heart rate down to below 60%.
Finished the session off with 10-15 mins of stretching.
Total session time was 50 mins, distance covered 11.1 miles. The entire session was done in the small chainring, as the point of the session was to keep a high cadence.
Felt fairly easy, is quite interesting working to heart rates rather than perceived effort - I am looking forward to comparing the distances travelled as the winter progresses - I am hoping to be travelling further for the same effort i.e. becoming more efficient on the bike.

Day 58 - Day 86 - Lots been going on
Things have been a bit manic over the last few weeks - resulting in no blog updates and only 1 bike ride.
To start things off I injured my back doing household chores, this left me struggling to stand upright for a week, a further week was required to get painfree. Not quite sure what happened but I guess it is just one of those things.
That was followed by the far more pleasant experience of a week in Sharm el Skeikh, Egypt. No cycling - too bloody hot even if I had a bike!! A nice relaxing week of snorkelling, diving, catching some sun and a few cocktails.
The last week has seen me start a new job and getting used to an 80 mile roundtrip commute.
Things will get back on track from this weekend though.
I will no longer manage any midweek outdoor rides as there is not enough daylight. So the plan will be midweek turbo sessions and weekend outdoor sessions - weather permitting.

Day 58 - Sunday 24th August
Fancied some hills today, so set off for a bit of adventure into Surrey - no real plan just cycle around finding the roads on the map which have the steep hill marks.
Had a great time out in the sunshine and rode over 1 1 in 8, 2 1 in 7, a 18% and a 24% hill, over a distance of 56 miles. There were also plenty other hills but with no road signs detailing the gradient. I managed to avoid defeat, although I did think my legs might fall off on the 24% hill.
Total height gain today was 3400ft, which is quite a lot for Surrey I think!!
Completed the ride in 3hrs and 43mins.
I am really happy with todays ride, as hills have always been something I have hated and been rubbish at, but it is now looking like all the training is paying off with regards to endurance and strength. I'm not quite king (or should that be queen?) of the mountain material yet, but everything does seem to be moving in the right direction.

Day 53 - Tuesday 19th August
Not much time today so did a quick 12.5 miles on the turbo tonight in 42 mins and 20 secs, so an average of 17.7 mph. Felt nice to push a bit harder after all the easier distance work I have been doing lately.
Day 51 - Sunday 17th August
Felt fine today after yesterday, legs a little bit stiff but no pain anywhere.
Took the day off as there were a few things around the house needing doing, including the greenhouse which seems to be feeling a little neglected.

Day 50 - Saturday 16th August - Ton Up
Right back on the bike again and back on track.
After last Fridays rather abrupt end to my ride, I decided today to try try again.
I set off early this morning determined to complete the entire route.
I headed up through Lightwater to Chertsey and finding for the second time that the road I planned to take was not where the map said it was.
From there it was up to Windsor, liz wasn't in again, Eton and up to Marlow.
I arrived in Henley at the halfway point feeling good headed in the direction of Reading.
This week I passed 57 miles with no incident, staying on the bike!!
From there I turned for home, glad to have the wind on my back as I headed back towards Windsor, the route then saw me skirting round Bracknell and heading back to Farnborough via Hartley Whitney.
The route can be found here http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Henley
The total distance was 102.4 miles and I covered it in 7hrs 15 mins.
No crashes today which was a plus, also no long lasting effects from last weeks either.
In all a happy day and I have now ridden 100 miles + in 1 day which is great.
Now off to eat BBQ food and catch up on the Olympics.

Days 43 -48 Saturday 9th - Thursday 14th August
No training in this period I'm afraid.
Was very stiff and sore last weekend after coming off the bike, so rested up.
Felt much better on Monday but decided to have a final rest day before getting back in the saddle.
Have been unwell Tuesday, Wednesday and today - is either a bug or my body reacting to the crash.
Feeling much better today though, so should be able to get out on the bike over the weekend - in the rain - nice!!

Day 40 Wednesday 6th August
Went out tonight for a 20 mile ride (it was 20 miles exactly).
Covered the distance in 1hr 15mins an average of 15.8mph - felt very easy and I'm really loving the tri-bars when cycling into the wind.

Day 38 - Mon 4th August
Cycled to work and back today.
Tonight, I headed out on a road I had never been on before which was nice, I got lost in Fleet(again) before heading over to Yateley and Sandhurst, then back home again. In total 23.3 miles and a nice ride, I think this is also my longest evening ride.

Days 35, 36 and 37
After a long week at work, mik whisked me away for a romantic weekends' camping, the reasons behind it being that we have just bought a new tent and also as a belated wedding anniversary trip. We couldn't be bothered to travel that far so just headed for Devizes.
We came here 2 years ago and cycled to Bath and back along the Kennet and Avon canal, and the plan was to do the same this time. So we set off on Saturday morning and headed for Bath, stopping only to shelter from the worst of the rain. On arrival in Bath, the rain stopped and the sun came out and we enjoyed a cider or two at a city centre pub. Due to us and the bikes being covered in mud we were very glad of the sunshine as we were sitting outside.
The journey back was always going to take longer than the journey there, as we planned to stop for lunch and also to visit a few hostelries. We stopped at Avoncliff to enjoy a Black Rat and lunch - lemon sole for mik and steak for me before contiuing back to the campsite.
I remember this route 2 years ago being quite a day out, but this time it was nothing - no sore knees, bum, neck etc and no wishing the end of the ride to occur.
Sunday saw us get up and pack everything away (before the rain came on) and head home where I had the great job of removing half of Wiltshire from both mountain bikes whilst mik dried the tent out.
In all a really nice weekend

Days 29 and 30
Well Friday night was really nice and I enjoyed a few beers in the sunshine.
A few beers too many resulted in no cycling on saturday - oops!!
I did think about it but any trip outside into the raging inferno changed my mind!!
So on sunday I knew I had to get out for a ride.
For those that do not know me, I am from Aberdeenshire, an area of Scotland not known for sunshine or heat. I covered myself in factor 30 and head out on an adventure cycle - basically I had no idea of where I was going!!
I headed off to Farnham and then into the complete unknown for me - it turned out I hit the kindgarten of the Surrey hills - a hot ride and 29 miles covered in around 2hrs but an enjoyable one where I got some really nice views over the Surrey landscape.
I am happy I survived in the heat, the only reason I stopped is because I am a bit paranoid about getting surnburnt - something which has only ever happened to me whilst cycling.
Happy to report no sunburn today and also gave me a chance to practice hydration strategy in the heat.

Day 27
Cycled to work and back today which was really nice in the sunshine.
Went out for a ride tonight with the main focus being on getting down on the tri bars as much as possible to see how much difference it makes whilst cycling into the wind. Have found that the position feels pretty good, although I will have to practice on some longer rides. Into the wind the cycling is so much easier than when I am up on the hoods. I did not look at the cycle computer the whole way round and the ride felt really nice and easy so imagine my shock when I got home to discover I had travelled the 17.9 miles in 59 mins and 17 seconds - an average of 18.1 mph.
Obviously this is not a speed that I will be averaging over the JoGLE and now I need to work on getting a position which is going to be comfortable for 8 or so hours a day, an average speed which is nice and easy and can be repeated on multiple days and a nutrition strategy which gets me enough energy to see the day through.

Day 26
Day off today, so no cycling but did spend a bit of time having a think about various point to point and adventurous circuits I can do, in order to avoid getting dizzy cycling around Farnborough.

Day 25
Back into the training again today!!
A lovely night, warm and sunny and finally the wind of the last couple of weeks has reduced.
Set off on a fairly standard route out of Farnborough, through Mytchett, a loop with a couple of hill, then a circuit of Aldershot (avoiding the cyclist hating car driver tonight!).
Not sure how far in total I did tonight as the computer did not start when I left the house but think it was arounf the 19-20 miles mark - will plot on the internet later.
Felt good, as expected after a week off and dont seem to have lost any fitness which is good.
Things looking not too manic this week, which is nice, so hoping for a good weeks training.

Once at home went for a 2.5 run.

Day 17
Not up to much today.
No ill effects from yesterdays ride - I did sleep well though!
The sun was out today and the greenhouses were screaming for some attention so spent some time sorting them out.
I decided that Beryl deserved some TLC after getting me home yesterday, so gave her a wash, degrease and lubed her back up again.
After miks puncture yesterday, I thought I would do a practice run for changing the inner tube as I have not had to do it on the road bike yet.
Apart from that, had a few beers in the sunshine and a nice chilled out day.

Day 16 - Havant to Farnborough
Most of my training has been based around loops from Farnborough, so today I decided to have a bit of an adventure and do a point to point route.
The morning began with a train ride via Guildford to Havant - pretty much on the south coast - the plan was to cycle home. I expected a few hills today as we had both the South and North Downs between the start point and home.
Mik accompanied me today which was really nice.
We set off from Havant and started the climb up into the South Downs - all was going well until we got 5 miles into the route and mik got a puncture. We stopped at the side of the road in a little hamlet called Forestside. Whilst mik was replacing the inner tube, not 1 but 2 local residents came out to see if we were OK and whether we wanted a drink or something - what a change from cyclist hating car drivers in Aldershot!
Once miks bike was ready we continued our journey - up the downs - down the downs until we thought we had finished with hills until nearer home. Wrong - South East Hamshire is also hilly - all the towns and villages we went through on route were at the bottom of valleys - still all good training! Even the descents were against us -no nice smooth straight roads - but bumby and twisty and requiring lots of concentration.
We made it to Alton and stopped at a nice pub for lunch - soup, greek salad and chips - yum!
The final run home saw some of the toughest hills of day - including a bit of a monster from Odiham heading for Farnham - made harder by the fact it was an A road and all the cyclists we saw were enjoying the lovely fast descent.
Coming through Aldershot we had the one and only downpour of the day - meant no need for a shower when we got home!
In all we covered 54 miles today - and next time on a point to point route I must look at the weather forecast - it is not wise to travel in a NW direction for a whole day when the wind is coming from the NW!
I really enjoyed doing the point to point route today, I went through places I have never been before and as such with no knowledge of the roads or hills made it what I imagine cycling on the JoGLE willbe like.
The route is here (the elevation calculations have got a little confused between feet and metres)

Day 15
It's Friday so that means a day off - I plan that most Fridays will be a day off
as it is Friday!!
Trying to concentrate at work but the fast jets flying around outside are making it quite difficult - working in Farnborough is great over the Air Show period.

Day 14
After a great day at work watching the Mig and the Vulcan (it really does fly!) at the IBM Farnborough BBQ I went out on a ride,
I went out on a route I last did about 3 weeks ago in 1hr 22 mins.
Tonight I completed the ride in 1hr 17mins, the distance is 19.5 miles and it involves 850ft of climbing, I managed to avoid all the drivers who hate cyclists and posted an average speed of 15.1mph, much faster than I had before. I also managed to cycle the entire route in the top cog (for info I only have 2 front cogs, as Beryl is a road bike).
I am quite happy with the way my average spped has increased, it is good to be in that stage where everything improves so quickly.
Work is great fun at the minute as we have the fast jets, the WWII aircraft etc testing out above the buliding before the air show next week, it is soo cool :-)

Day 12
It was sunny today, so I was looking forward to getting out on the bike after work.
Shortly after starting I discovered that although it was sunny it was also windy as well, in addition it was a magic 360 degree headwind as well.
The ride went fine until I was coming through Aldershot where it appeared that the cyclist hating car drivers were out in force. Twice I had to break to avoid cars that had turned into the road in front of me - either they had not seen me, misjudged my speed or didnt care.
At the third road junction, the man in the big 4X4 waited for me to pass before turning into the road. He then performed an overtaking manoeuvre, nothing special I hear you say, he then cut right in front of me, indicated left and braked hard. I was only 6ft behind him so some form of collision was going to happen, thankfully I managed to unclip my left foot, swerve the bike up over the kerb and use the left foot to bounce of the back of the car. The driver stopped only long enough to shake his fist at me and shout abuse before continuing. I hope he is really happy when he he find the cleat shaped scratches on the back of his car.
Thankfully neither the bike or myself received any injuries.
After this close miss, I decided to go home feeling I had used up my lives for the day.
So in total a 16.2 mile ride covered in 1hr 1min and 36 secs so averaging something about 15.7 mph.
My first milestone has been reached though - the 100 mile training barrier!!

Day 11
Went for a 2.5 miles run last night - even managed to fit it in between the rain which was nice.

Day 10
I have not been out on the bike for a few days, so decided that something would happen today.
Woke up at normal time for a Sunday, looked out the window and saw the rain bouncing off the road and the trees bent backwards - thought better of cycling and went back to bed!
Went out later in the afternoon when the worst of the weather appeared to have past.
Did not really go out with a plan, I wanted to cover this route Sandhurst circuit as it was a new route for me and is part of the local area I don't know at all, then see what happenned.
After about 5 mins on the road, a rather large and very black could loomed above. At the sametime, the wind turned cold and stronger, it also appeared to be swirling - resulting in what appeared to be a 360 degree headwind - nice! The Met Office had been forecasting gusts to 40 mph and judging by the way the bike was wobbling they were not lying. I managed to get all the way around the lap to within a couple of miles of the house when the heavens opened - it was quite unpleasant with the driving rain, gusty almost dark conditions so I just finished the route and headed home.
I enjoyed today though, it was good fun trying to beat the weather home, total time out on the road today was 1hr 34mins and 26 seconds of which 1hr 29mins and 36 seconds were spent cycling (the rest of the time at red lights/junctions) resulting in an average speed of 16.48 mph.

Day 9
We had miks daughter staying with us this weekend, so today was a trip to London Zoo.
Had great fun wandering around looking at the Gorillas, Lions and Dragons - thankfully they did let all three of us leave.
No training today, but all day walking around London is a pretty good substitute!

Day 8
Felt knackered today and also had a painfull left arm, I think I will put it down to the Hep A/Typhoid shot last night.
As a result, just a bike to work and back today followed by an early night.

Day 4
Cycled to work and back today, not far just 3.4 miles roundtrip.
Bit short on time this evening and wanted to watch andy murray at wimbledon, so I set up the turbo infront of the tv and covered 16.4 miles in an hour.
Baked spud with tuna and salad for tea tonight.

Nothing really happened on Day 3. Body had no ill effects from Saturdays ride other than a bit of sunburn on my arms.
Pretty much spent the day chilling and pottering about before an Indian takeaway tea - yum.

Day 2 - The Chippenham 48
This morning started with a 7am alarm call
- on a Saturday monring!!!!A nice drive to Chippenham, setting up the
bikes and waiting for Nathan ;-)We set off from John's house and had a nice
tail wind up the hills before turing into
the direction of the pub - where we first
met the head wind (of doom!!)A lovely lunch of cheddar ploughmans for me
and scampi and chips for mik before we
heaaded off into the wind of doom for
another 26 miles. We made it back to Johns house alive and
the 48 miles were complete. This was 22 miles further than I had ever
ridden before on Beryl and my furthest since the Oxford to Cambirdge ride (many years ago) - it was also the first time mik had covered more than 2 miles in one go on his new bike (The Black Pig, which all miks vehicles are called).Back at johns we had a nice BBQ of homemade burgers and honey and mustard sausages - which was lovely,All in all a great day and it was great to meet Nathan for the first time, and he proved to be the fastest thing ever on a bike downhill! Thanks to John and Sasha for their hospitaility

Day 1
Right, well if those boys (John and Nathan) can have a blog then so can I.
Not got much to say today, no cycling going on today as got 48 miles planned tomorrow with John, Nathan and Mik + pub and BBQ!
Weather forecast looks nice - not too hot or windy.
I hope John does not head off too quickly and lose us as I think he is the only one who knows where we are going!
last thing for today is to introduce Beryl The Black Peril who will take me from John O Groats to Lands End.

Next update after I have (hopefully) completed 48 miles tomorow which will be the furtherest I have cycled on Beryl.
